Leyla Miranda, Environmental Advisor in the Chilean Maritime Authority for fourteen years, she is a marine biologist from Universidad de Concepción (Chile) and has a Master’s degree in Environmental Management from Universidad de Valparaíso (Chile). Her main duties are establishing measures with regard to international environmental conventions, especially those related to alien species, in order to comply with them and control harmful aquatic organisms from ballast water or ship hulls as a vector. She has also participated in several GloBallast Workshops for the South Pacific Region since 2009 until this project ended in 2017. Furthermore, she organized and participated as a speaker in two courses of “Compliance, Monitoring and Enforcement of Ballast Water Convention” in December 2015 and November 2017 in Chile.
Subsequently, she attended the BWMTech Event in December 2018 in London as a panelist, presenting the Chilean experience in ballast water, and in the 1st GLoFouling meeting in October 2019 in Melbourne. Lately, due to the Covid pandemic, she participated virtually in the IMO PPR Subcommittee and MEPC.
