Martin Olofsson is a Senior Principal Engineer in the unit Environmental Protection at the Approval Centre for DNV GL AS in Oslo, Norway. The unit is responsible for the plan approvals of systems related to environmental protection, both for new-buildings and retrofit vessels. This involves a range of processes, like sewage treatment, hazardous materials and energy efficiency in addition to the ballast water. Mr. Olofsson assumed his current position in May 2012 and is mostly involved in the type approval process for Ballast Water Treatment Systems. This includes technical review, monitoring and surveys; supervising the sub-contracted laboratories for the DNV GL position as USCG Independent Laboratory; and liaison with BWTS manufacturers seeking type approval from either an Administration (IMO) or USCG, or both. Mr. Olofsson has worked for DNV during the last 20 years and has held various positions related to the human element in shipping, competence management and training of surveyors. He spent 4 years in Korea working as DNV Competence Manager for Korea, China and Japan. Mr. Olofsson holds a M.Sc. as Naval Architect and Marine Engineering from Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, and a Lic.Eng. in Maritime Transport from the same university.
