ASBA is the recognized professional trade association for ship brokers and agents in the United States and Canada. Its Constitution dates back to January 9th, 1934, when the first meeting of the Association was held at the New York Produce Exchange in New York.
The Association’s Code of Ethics, adopted in 1949, sets the standard of professional conduct and practice, and defines customs of the trade for ship brokers and agents. The code reaches beyond the United States, the principles of the ASBA code conform to similar codes of conduct of national associations worldwide. A member of ASBA is, therefore, an informed and reliable participant in the international chartering and agency community.
The Association will host its 17th Annual Cargo Conference in September 25-27, 2019 in Miami, FL. The program will highlight the cargoes of particular interest for the year. Participants at last year’s conference included owners, operators, brokers, agents and many other maritime industry representatives.
The Association provides maritime education for ship brokers, agents and operations staff through its Home Study Course “The Basic Principles of Chartering” and distance learning courses: Shipbroking and Chartered Vessel Operations, Maritime Law, Commercial Trade Transactions and Agency. Our very popular “live seminars,” Business of Shipping Intensive I and II, are offered in port cities across the country. ASBA also offers a diploma for students who successfully complete a course and seminar concentration in chartering and/or ship agency.
ASBA weighs in on pertinent issues on behalf of its members in Congress and with government agencies who support the maritime community. ASBA engages in informed dialogues with maritime interests such as NAMO, BIMCO, FONASBA, INTERCARGO and INTERTANKO. ASBA takes the lead in supplying the “tools of trade.” It publishes and maintains the American Tanker Rate Schedule. It promotes, adopts and is responsible for various charter parties: the NYPE, AMWELSH, NORGRAIN, ASBATANKVOY, ASBACHEMVOY, and soon to be released, ASBAGASVOY. The ASBA Charter Party Editor supports ASBA forms and others in an easy to use “Word” like look and feel. Check out our website: www.asba.org.
ASBA is governed by a Board of Directors that includes the most prestigious agency and brokerage houses in the United States. It is a voluntary membership organization focused on the ship broker and agent network, and its members are firmly pledged to professional negotiations and service in maritime trade. ASBA Agent Members are certified annually by the Association that recognizes ship agent members as quality service providers. Certified ASBA Agent Members are in turn awarded the international Quality Standard issued by the Federation of National Associations of Ship Brokers and Agents (FONASBA). Memberships are open to those companies and individuals actively engaged in the business of ship brokerage and agency who will firmly pledge to follow its principles.
