Methanex Corporation is the world’s largest producer and supplier of methanol to major international markets.
Methanol is an ultra-clean biodegradable marine fuel that complies with the shipping industry’s increasingly stringent SOx, NOx emissions regulations. Based on the IMO’s Energy Efficiency Design Index, methanol also reduces CO2 emissions by over 10% compared to marine gas oil and greater reductions can be achieved using green methanol, in line with the 2050 CO2 emission reduction target. A liquid at room temperature, methanol is cost-effective in terms of fuel costs, infrastructure and vessel conversion or new build capital. As one of the world’s most widely shipped commodities, methanol is accessible globally through a stablished supply chain.
Significant interest in methanol as a marine fuel continues to develop globally and has been supported by pilots and commercial activities. The Stena Germanica ferry has been successfully running on methanol with Wartsila converted engines for over three years. Methanex’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Waterfront Shipping, has invested in eleven new chemical cargo vessels that use MAN dual-fuel engines capable of running on methanol and on other marine fuels, adding more than 40,000 hours of operational experience. Many other demonstration projects for small engines have been implemented, providing solutions for multiple vessel types.
