Dr Chris Menkiti is a geotechnical expert with over 30 years’ experience. He is a Senior Partner in GCG, a boutique geotechnical firm with an international reputation for applying research and innovation to practical engineering problems.
From 2015 to 2017, Dr Menkiti led a research team investigating the stability of bauxite ores during sea voyages. His team covered several ores from Asia and Africa. Chris Menkiti was a member of the Global Bauxite Working Group (GBWG) and is a co-author of its international report for the IMO that led to new Schedules for BAUXITE and BAUXITE FINES. Prior to this, in 2012 to 2013, Dr Menkiti researched into the liquefaction risk of iron ore cargoes, work that contributed to new IMO Schedules for IRON ORE and IRON ORE FINES.
Dr Menkiti has provided expert advice to legal teams, insurance companies, shippers and vessel owners on shipping issues involving bulk cargoes. He has also provided geotechnical advice on the seismic stability and liquefaction risk of engineering structures such as ports and breakwaters, including new locks the Panama Canal expansion project. He is the author of over 50 published papers, was chairman of the British Geotechnical Association, and has given international lectures on large infrastructure projects and ground risk.
