Designed and leads The Smart Green Shipping Alliance, SGSA, a collaborative industry initiative created to build technically, commercially and environmentally superior systems solutions for shipping. It works through co-creation, transferring technology and knowledge from offshore yacht racing, F1, renewable energy, aviation and defence to complement deep commercial maritime expertise. It engages with, and challenges, all aspects of existing system – ship design, building, financing, operation, breaking – to re-design a more resilient long term solution for critical supply chains.
The SGSA developed and tested the design of a medium sized, new build sailing hybrid merchant ship externally validated as using ~50% less fuel than conventionally powered ships and has designed retro-fit wind-assist technologies for existing ships. It has designed a new business model to accelerate uptake of the technology. It has relationships with large cargo owners and ship owners and charterers. The SGSA’s purpose is to expediently execute the ship design and take this, and other complementary and discrete low carbon, maritime renewables solutions to scale.
The SGSA regularly engages with: Humphreys Yacht Design, Cammell Laird, University College London, University of Southampton, Rolls-Royce, Lloyds Register, Tata Steel, QinetiQ, Met Office, Tyndall Centre for Climate Change, National Composite Centre, Willis Towers Watson, HSBC to co-create whole systems solutions from design to financing.
The project won the ‘One to Watch’ Award at 2014 The Ship Efficiency event.
