Susan Gourvenec is Professor of Offshore Geotechnical Engineering, Deputy Director of the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute, and holds a Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies for Intelligent & Resilient Ocean Engineering at the University of Southampton. Susan’s technical speciality lies in the characterisation and response of geo- and granular materials and development of geotechnical design methods, mostly applied to the offshore energy sector. Susan works across disciplines and sectors in developing solutions to address various grand challenges including, for example, decarbonisation, safety at end of engineered life, and solid bulk cargo liquefaction. Susan leads a joint industry project ‘Solid Bulk Cargo: Strategies for Effective Control’ – a multi-year initiative funded by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation with more than 25 partners across the sector and globe.
