Saleem Alavi President at Sea Commerce, UAE


Captain Saleem Alavi joined Merchant Marine in 1970 and during last 48-year maritime career has so far included him as
seafarer, ship owner, charterer, broker, marine surveyor/inspector, consultant, regulator, and industry analyst of a ship
finance institution.

Last 5 years he worked in Oil & Gas industry as LNG Procurement and Logistic Consultant with Emirates LNG Abu Dhabi,
on a LNG Regasification Terminal Project.

Captain Alavi has served as the Maritime Advisor and Director of the UAE Ship Registry, reporting directly to the Chairman
of the Federal Transport Authority (FTA), the maritime administration of UAE based in Abu Dhabi.

Prior to joining the Federal Transport Authority (Maritime Administration of UAE), Captain Alavi was the head of Business
Development & Research for the Department of Transport (Maritime Sector) in Abu Dhabi. He was Director of Business
Development for Dubai Maritime City, joining DMC from DVB Bank AG in Rotterdam, where he was a Senior Vice
President/Senior Business Analyst for its Research & Strategic Planning Department.

He served as the President at Sea Commerce America in Houston and has worked extensively with shipowners, charterers
and traders all across the globe.

He sailed as a Master on merchant vessels before taking onshore assignment and has sea-going experience on nearly all
types of vessels including bulk carriers, tankers, MPP/container, heavylift, cattle carrier, reefer and passenger vessels.

Captain Alavi holds Master’s degree in Maritime Logistic from Erasmus University, Rotterdam. In addition, he also hold
Post graduate diploma in Maritime Law from London Metropolitan and Diploma in Maritime Investigation, Certificates in
International Environmental Law, Alternate Dispute Resolution and LNG Contracting and Pricing. He holds Master foreign
going certificate of competency.

Captain Alavi is member of Society for Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) NY, Institute of Marine Economists
(Australia), Society of Petroleum Energy, The World Association of Waterborne Infrastructure and Transport (USA Chapter)
German Maritime Arbitrators Association (GMAA) Germany, International Association of Marine Investigators(IAMI) NY,
Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb)UK, Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) UK. He is also a Maritime Expert with
