Richard Westgarth Head of Campaigns at BMT

Richard has over 40 years of experience in the defence and maritime sectors as an innovation technology strategist and business adviser. His wealth of experience in naval and defence domains builds on his earlier work exposure in research, innovation, change management and consultancy. His role as Head of Campaigns at BMT is to operate across all the Organisation’s businesses internationally, looking at medium to long term trends and developing BMT’s cross-functional capabilities to match the customers’ future needs. This embraces emergent and disruptive technologies including autonomous systems, Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital transformation, Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). As part of this, he has been increasingly engaged in looking at the future people and skills issues arising from the adoption of these technologies.

He has been extensively involved, on behalf of the Maritime UK coalition body, leading their futures programme and supporting the development of the Maritime Sector Strategy. He sits on the Transport Executive Committee of the IET and the Innovation Committee of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects. He co-authored the ‘Global Marine Technology Trends 2030’ series of reports. He is currently looking at the impact of the ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution’ on the maritime sector with a specific interest in the implications of technology on the future of work and organisational design.

He is a Chartered Electronics Engineer, a Member of the IET and sits on their Transport Executive Panel, a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects and a member of their Innovation Committee and a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts, Manufacture and Commerce. Outside of work he is a keen mountain walker, plays guitar and enjoys travelling.
