What Happened at Arctic Shipping Forum 2018:
New technologies and innovations
Analysis of new designs and concepts for ice-going vessels including icebreakers, expedition vessels and cargo carriers. Included discussion of ballast water systems, challenges of polar class and EEDI, new materials for ice-going propellers and satellite mapping.
The Polar Code in practice
Case studies from ship operators on using the Polar Code as a valuable tool for voyage management. Attendees heard from regulators, learnt how to interpret the Polar Code, and found out what steps need to be taken to qualify for a polar ship certificate.
Preparedness, response and risk assessment
Attendees learnt how insurers assess the risk to ice going vessels. Discovered the challenges LNG crews face working in ice-covered waters, heard about oil spill response, and discussed emergency preparedness, response and rescue planning for casualties in ice-covered waters.
Monitoring Arctic economic and market trends
Updates on market and economic development in the Arctic and the impact on shipping. Included a focus session on the development of the Northern Sea Route, updates on US Coast Guard policy for Arctic waters and an overview of the current fleet of ice class ships.
Training and development
Crew training for ice navigation: highlighting new training criteria and courses. Heard how training schools can gain certification for ice navigation courses, discussed the merits of simulators vs onboard training, and found out about new skill requirements for 21st century vessels.
Choice of seminars
Attendees debated emergency response in the Arctic half-day seminar Managing Emergency Response in Ice Covered Waters which was followed by the Planning and Operations for Cruise Shipping in the Arctic seminar.
