Douglas Martin began his sea going career sailing for Apex Marine after graduating from SUNY Maritime College, New York in 1983 with a Bachelor of Engineering degree and deck officer license. After 14 years sailing he joined Smit Salvage in 1997 to continue his maritime career in marine salvage.

Captain Martin has been responsible for complex and simple salvages throughout the Americas region and beyond.

He now holds the position of President and Sr Salvage Master for Smit Salvage Americas, serves as Director on the Board of Directors for Donjon Smit, is Chairman of the OPA90 Forum and is a member on the Board of Directors for North American Marine Environmental Protection Association (NAMEPA).
